The Pokemon Hanafuda Nintendo Limited Edition is a highly sought-after, 48-card deck fusing traditional Japanese playing cards with classic Pokemon characters. Released in 2013, it features Pikachu and many other Pokemon in 12 seasonal motifs. A famous 2016 crossover set also exists, featuring Mario and Luigi. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Features
  • Format: The cards are much smaller and thicker than standard western playing cards, made of high-quality paper stock.
  • Design: Instead of standard numbers, the 48-card deck is divided into 12 "months" of the year. Each month features a specific flower/plant paired with an iconic Pokemon.
  • Pikachu Spotlight: Pikachu appears across several cards in the deck. Notably, Pikachu is featured prominently as the "Kas" (chaff) or bright cards depending on the set, sometimes riding on the back of Zapdos or as a special promotional crossover with Mario. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Editions & Variations
  • 2013 Kanto Version: The original Nintendo Japan release. It features Pokemon from the Kanto region (like Charizard, Blastoise, and Pikachu) incorporated into traditional Hanafuda art.
  • 2016 Mario Pikachu Version: A highly collectible, special edition released alongside the Pokemon Center Kyoto opening, depicting Pikachu wearing Mario and Luigi outfits as part of the Hanafuda suits. [1, 3, 4, 5]
Collectibility
Because they are out of production and feature iconic characters like Pikachu alongside Nintendo's founding product medium (Hanafuda cards), these sets are extremely valuable to collectors. Individual PSA-graded cards or sealed decks often command thousands of dollars on the secondary market. [1]
